The Momentum Builds: HFPA’s Landmark First In-Person Gathering

On April 13, 2026, the Hawai‘i Falls Prevention Alliance (HFPA) marked a major milestone, hosting its first in-person coalition meeting at The Pacific Club. From 9 AM to 3 PM, partners from across the islands gathered to strengthen our shared mission: empowering communities and reducing falls among Hawai‘i’s older adults through alliance-driven collaboration.

The day opened with inspiring remarks from HFPA Chair Gary Simon, joined by Stan Michaels (leader of the former Hawai‘i Falls Prevention Consortium) and Debbie Morikawa (Deputy Director of the Department of Health). Their messages underscored a powerful truth: while the challenge of falls is significant, the momentum for prevention has never been stronger.

The program offered a comprehensive look at the landscape of falls prevention in Hawai‘i:

  • Dan Galanis provided essential updates on fall-related statistics across the islands.

  • Kūpuna advocates Cloy, Leona, and Pam moved the room with personal stories of how falls have impacted their lives, reminding everyone why this work is so vital.

  • Joe Wadahara and Carl Otsuka of the Honolulu Fire Department, along with Michael Lam of the Hawai‘i Fire Department, shared first-responder perspectives and strategies for reducing fall risks in the home.

  • Caroline Cadirao, Director of the State’s Executive Office on Aging, discussed strategies the aging network utilizes to prevent falls and support kūpuna.

  • Joni Kamiya, President of the Occupational Therapy Association of Hawai‘i, highlighted practical prevention strategies.

The coalition also received an encouraging progress update on the National Council on Aging (NCOA) grant, which continues to provide the vital support needed to fuel these statewide efforts.

It wasn't all data and presentations! Members engaged in interactive games, exercise demonstrations, and a collaborative breakout session designed to identify ways to build a more robust, integrated coalition.

The HFPA extends a heartfelt mahalo to our sponsor, Gary Simon, as well as the event planning team, our expert presenters, and the courageous kūpuna who shared their journeys. A special thank you goes to our coalition members who traveled from the neighbor islands to ensure every part of our state was represented.

Together, we are building a safer, more connected Hawai‘i where our kūpuna can thrive. We look forward to growing our partnerships and advancing fall prevention efforts in every community.
